Greetings and
welcome to each of you!
On behalf of the
American Indian Science and Engineering Society
(AISES) Minnesota Professional Chapter we thank you for
your attendance and participation in the 1998 National American Indian
Telecommunication Workshop. As the Year 2000 approaches Indian Country
finds itself at a crossroads in the area of telecommunications. With
tribes located in the most rural of rural America, the possibilities
that improved telecommunication capabilities has on quality of life
issues is being realized by those tribes that have prioritized
telecommunication improvements and telecom ownership.
To view the need for improved
telecommunication capabilities and identify only barriers is
limiting. The need for improved telecommunication capabilities
offers tribes the opportunity for ownership, regulation, easement
assessments and taxation. It is also a new day to negotiate with
service providers to form partnerships, or set objectives for local
Indian employment within these existing companies.
This workshop targeted a varied
audience which had representation from tribal officials; economic
development and tribal planning offices; healthcare and educational
leadership; and the public and private sector. We are hopeful that
this workshop created solutions for meeting some of Indian Country’s
economic development objectives through building a sound
telecommunication infrastructure.
We wish to extend a very special thank
you to the following sponsors for making the workshop possible. The
sponsors include the Competitive
Communications Group, Black and Veatch, Airadigm Communications,
Oneida Nation of Wisconsin, and Northern Arizona University.
We hope this workshop provided each of
you with an opportunity to learn and share relevant information that
will be useful to you as you begin to move forward in improving
telecommunication services and opportunities in Indian Country.
